Outfielder Wally Moon won the Rookie of the Year Award this year, batting .304, with 12 home runs and 76 RBIs. Along the way, on April 13 Moon hit a home run in his first major league at-bat.[4]

During the season, Tom Alston became the first black player in the history of the Cardinals.[5]
