Scientific classification
Domain: Archaea
Kingdom: Euryarchaeota
Phylum: Euryarchaeota
Class: Methanomicrobia
Order: Methanomicrobiales
Binomial name
Balch and Wolfe 1981

In the taxonomy of microorganisms, the Methanomicrobiales are an order of the Methanomicrobia.[1] Methanomicrobiales are strictly carbon dioxide reducing methanogens, using hydrogen or formate as the reducing agent.[2] As seen from the phylogenetic tree based on the 'The All-Species Living Tree' Project the family Methanomicrobiaceae is highly polyphyletic within the Methanomicrobiales.

The currently accepted taxonomy is based on the List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (LPSN)[3] and National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)[4] and the phylogeny is based on 16S rRNA-based LTP release 106 by 'The All-Species Living Tree' Project.[5]
